High School English & Writing Skills

Does your child need extra support with English or writing at school?

I offer personalised online ESL and English lessons for high school students who want to improve their writing, vocabulary, grammar, reading and communication skills.

Lessons can support students who are learning English as an additional language, as well as students who are confident English speakers but need help developing stronger writing and academic skills.

How I can help

Writing skills

Many students have good ideas but find it difficult to organise them clearly in writing.

We can work on skills such as:

  • planning before writing
  • structuring paragraphs
  • developing and supporting ideas
  • using relevant examples
  • connecting ideas clearly
  • writing effective introductions, conclusions and paragraphs
  • using a wider range of sentence structures
  • improving vocabulary and word choice
  • paraphrasing
  • editing and proofreading

Depending on the student’s needs, we can work with persuasive, analytical, informative, creative or other types of school writing.

Grammar and vocabulary

Students often know what they want to say but are not always sure how to express it accurately.

Lessons can focus on areas such as:

  • sentence structure
  • complex sentences
  • verb forms and tenses
  • academic and subject vocabulary
  • choosing more precise words

Reading and comprehension

We can also work on strategies to help students understand and respond to more challenging texts.

This may include:

  • identifying main ideas
  • finding relevant evidence
  • making inferences
  • recognising the writer’s purpose or viewpoint
  • summarising information
  • responding to comprehension and analysis questions

Speaking and communication

For students who are learning English as an additional language, lessons can also include speaking and listening practice.

We can work on:

  • developing longer and clearer answers
  • expressing opinions
  • explaining ideas
  • participating in class discussions
  • building confidence using English

Who are these lessons for?

These lessons may be suitable for high school students who:

  • are learning English as an additional language
  • need help improving school writing
  • find it difficult to organise or develop their ideas
  • make frequent grammar or sentence-structure errors
  • want to use more sophisticated vocabulary accurately
  • need extra help understanding reading tasks
  • want to become more confident speaking and writing in English

I work with students at different levels, so lessons can be adapted to suit both the student’s age and current English ability.

Lessons based on the student’s needs

There is no fixed course.

We can focus on the areas that are most useful for the student and, where appropriate, connect lessons with the type of work they are doing at school.

Students can bring examples of their writing, school tasks or teacher feedback to lessons. These can help us identify areas to work on.

The aim is to help students understand how to improve their own work and become more independent writers and learners.
